In a recent Boston Globe story entitled, “China leads world in race to make clean energy“, there are some astounding project facts and figures. 1.12 million jobs – yes, that’s 1.2 million jobs – in renewable energy, and about 100,000 jobs a year added to that total since 2008. China’s plans call for 8% of its energy to be produced by wind, solar and biomass by 2020. Compare that to 4% in the United States. Behind this is a commitment from the government, about $45B was committed to upgrading the electrical grid in 2009 alone.
Companies which produce the turbines for wind power, such as Vestas of Denmark, are investing. The world’s largest wind turbine manufacturing complex is being built by Vestas in China.
The Wall Street Journal has also covered the subject, casting some doubt on the numbers provided by the government.
Yes, says the Journal, there is an effort to have 35% of the power come from clean energy sources, but “what’s really telling is the other 65% of…

I stumbled upon a local eco-fashion site after following a link from one of my Google alerts to this Express story about DC-area entrepreneur Kimberly Wilson. She runs three yoga studios and has an “eco-luxe” organic, bamboo clothing line called TranquiliT. Her fashion site also has a corresponding blog. The site says the clothes are “for yoga and beyond,” and that “green is the new black.” Check
The Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold wrote a great piece (“Troubled waters” with accompanying photo gallery) yesterday tracking clean-up efforts in the Anacostia River and its watershed. He finds it’s a mixed bag: There’s less raw sewage going into the river now compared to 10 years ago, and as a result less algae. But he writes, “more than half of its brown bullhead catfish have tumors on
Work is under way for the remodeling phase for our clients’ homes in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.
The home remodelling plans include building an addition to add living space (brown sections on drawings indicate remodelled areas / changes). The existing dining area will move to the current living room, and the kitchen will gain the space created by moving the dining.

Costa Rica, largely known for its gorgeous ecological landscape and its efforts toward sea turtle conservation, is seen by some as being in rather dire circumstances concerning the preservation of its most valuable ecological gems.
In a recent New York Time op-ed piece, Nicholas Kristof draws attention to the conflict over Las Baulas Marine National Park; the park is being “downgraded” by the Costa Rican government from national park (protected) status in order to allow for larger real estate buying volume.
Kristof feels that, although highly lauded for its high educational and environmental sustainability standards, the park’s situation is a blatant disregard of priorities for the country. With heavy migration from the United States, maintaining the integrity of the national parks and the coastline is the only insurance against the sale of its most precious real estate to outsiders.
While a true ecotourism industry guarantees sustainability, the private buying and selling of…

Watch the above video from Healthy Child, Healthy World and heed the wake-up call to change the way we do “chemicals” in our world. Have you noticed the rise of asthma, learning disabilities, autism, cancer, and many other diseases?
Many of you know me for my green building articles but may not realize that I built my house using non or low toxic materials for my children. I am one of those parents who has children that have learning disabilities, ADD, JV diabetes, eczema, and asthma. I know parents who lost their children to cancer, and friends who are fighting cancer. Chemicals are in our air, the ground, in our food, and our water. We wear chemicals, eat chemicals, and sleep in chemicals. So, am I surprised at the rise in illness? No.
I know. Many of you feel overwhelmed with all the media scares and not knowing the truth. I feel the same way although I may seem more knowledgable than many. I am not a…
