Solar Energy23 Feb 2010 05:01 am

One of the most frequent questions we get as a solar energy integrator is “Why should I buy now, won’t the price of solar keep coming down?”

For the last 12 months, the price of solar has come down drastically, as much as 30% in some cases. However, the rebates for solar have also dropped by virtually the same amount.

As you can see in the graph (click link above to view), the price of residential solar is leveling out, while the rebates continue to decrease (per the new tiered rebate program from Xcel). Thus, the cost to the customer is now beginning to increase for the first time since the introduction of rebates in Colorado.

The price of solar will continue to slowly decrease, with supply levels still high and with more competition than ever between solar integrators - but it is highly unlikely we will see a drop in price like we saw in 2009. The solar rebates are finite, and will continue to decrease until…

Samsung image.jpgAmong the flood of new smart phones, the Motorola Droid, Blackberry Bold, and Google Nexus One rate high marks from tech reviewers for performance and features. But the reviews and ads don’t mention that these phones also emit relatively high levels of radiation, compared to federal safety standards.

How can you tell your phone’s radiation level?

Not by looking at your phone, that’s for sure. But EWG’s new consumer guide - and newly introduced state legislation - aim to protect consumers’ right to know:

  • In mid-February, EWG released our latest guide to cell phone radiation levels, focusing on the newest, most highly touted smart phones to hit the market in recent months. (For example, the radiation level of Apple’s newest iPhone ranks in the middle of the pack.)
  • The consumer guide’s update coincides with introduction by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) of legislation, sponsored by EWG, requiring cell phones and wireless headsets sold in California to disclose the amount of…

Car Racks significantly reduce car mileage.  It is amazing how many people drive around with ski or bike racks permanently attached to their car. 99% of the time, these car racks are empty.  Why not just remove them and install when they are needed.

No doubt convenience is the main reason.  Car racks interfere with aerodynamics.  We can hear a distinct noise whenever a rack is on our vehicle.  A site did a test and measured 12% less miles per gallon with an empty rack and 27% less mileage with a bike on the rack.  Placing a rack on the back of the car reduces mileage far less,  so consider a hitch mounted ski or bike rack.

Does such a thing even exist? Personally, I just use a trashcan without a liner and just rinse it out when it gets funky rather than add more trash to the landfill, but this doesn’t work for everybody. There are those times where you really do need a garbage bag, and not all trash bags [...]

living-echo website

When I first perused the green product shopping website  LivingECHO, my first thought what a great site for  one stop shopping.  I could click on many different organic and sustainable products from various environmentally minded companies and buy them right from the same site.  Think of an open food market place where there are all these vendors and everyone has a table to sell their wares.  In essense a win-win for the consumer and green businesses.

How did I land on LivingECHO’s website? I recently received an email from Ken Spector touting the Company’’s concept.  Usually, when another company sends me an email and tell me what a great site they are, I often shoot back a reply,  while yawning from the same old same come-on that I get and ask “how so?

What Different about LivingECHO?

Well,  Spector of the Company rose to the Anna challenge, and replied why LivingECHO is different.

Many of you buy from such websites such as  BuyGreen.comUncommon Goods, and…

I’ve always admired gardeners for a hobby that produces food that’s not only delicious, but also eco-friendly and sustainable.  I mean, what’s more local than your own backyard? The University of Washington and the City of Seattle did a study on greenhouse gas emissions from locally sourced food versus food sourced out of state or [...]
