report cardYou can find out whether your Alma Mater is making a difference in Sustainability.  We’ve found a great site that allows you to check out most colleges in terms of their efforts to keep themselves green with green projects, green buildings, even in their transparency about the way environmental decisions are made.

If you are an Alum of the University of New Hampshire, you’ll probably be happy with what you see.  If you happen to be from Duquense University, however, well… er…not so much.

The site does a tremendous job in allowing you to search by school, by state, even by athletic conference.  You can also see how a school’s grades in each of the subcategories are improving (or not!) from year to year.

This is a non-profit organization which appears to put a great deal of thinking into their analysis.

From their site:

What is the College Sustainability Report Card?

The College Sustainability Report Card is the only comparative evaluation of campus and endowment sustainability…

The RollerGen Power System attaches to bicycles (Either stationary or standard) and turns Pedal Power into Electric Power for Electronics Devices.  It powers cell phones, MP3 players, GPS units, anything powered by USB, the standard for modern electronic devices. Power is stored in a pocket sized miniature battery that has the dual USB output plugs.

It charges up 30 watts in a short 4-5 miles of riding. The unit fits bikes like a standard rear rack and has a spinning flywheel that contacts your tires. The only downside is that it costs $495.  Hit $99 and they will sell a ton of units.

As part of America’s Schools Program’s ongoing commitment to environmental education and awareness, they are teaming up with Sustainable Travel International (STI), to offer two trips in 2010 that exemplify responsible tourism in action.

These active and experiential trips are scheduled for June 18-27, 2010, in South East Queensland, Australia, and June 11-16, 2010, at Yellowstone National Park.

Each region’s top eco-lodges and green hotels will be a highlight of these trips. These properties are working to protect the environment and economically benefiting the local communities where they’re located, and some have a strong focus on preserving cultural heritage as well.

“We are excited to partner with America’s Schools Program in offering these eco-friendly trips,” said Brian Mullis, co-founder and president of STI. “Although more tour operators are offering trips that feature ‘green’ elements, the travel industry needs to do more to support local economic…

Abe Lincoln feeling really good about all the pending Green Building laws.

You know why Abe is smiling? Because America has a bright future ahead of it.  We will get out of our economic rut and green building is the answer. Green building will create jobs and spur the economy to recover.  Right now  Congress has taken the lead and there are several green building bills pending.  Although the  USGBC’s  press release was entitled “the USGBC’s top 10 list,” in reality, the list comprised of its  top 20 green building bills pending or enacted by Congress.  At the top of the list was The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The list included  nine pending bills in the House and ten bills in the Senate.

“With our crippled economy, continuing energy crisis, and changing climate, Americans need timely and effective solutions to set a new course for how we use and think about energy,” said Sen. Snowe. “Energy efficiency has emerged as one of the most effective and expeditious actions that can be taken to preserve valuable…

In the United States there are all kinds of environmental initiatives and programs, including “teach-ins” on global warming solutions. This means that your school-age children may know more than you can imagine about the environment, global warming, carbon footprints, and more.

Just consider the school lunchroom; when you were in school it wasn’t all that likely that there were separate recycling bins for appropriate materials. Today, however, millions of cafeterias and lunchrooms have very clearly marked containers into which students are expected to pitch their recyclables. Even the need for such programs is reduced by the fact that many students bring reusable containers to school each day too.

It pays to consider if your kids are “greener” than you are. Remember that it isn’t just the school that influences and educates them. Children are known to watch a few hours of television each day, and not all programming is as mindless as some might assume. Many of the most…
