When we released our cell phone radiation report in Fall 2009, we heightened a national conversation about the issue. Our consumer database is helping people choose lower-radiation phones and our 8 tips for using phones more safely are helping us stay connected with less radiation.

CNN’s 5-minute segment is an excellent overview of the problem, and an indication that people are paying more attention to this important health issue. Watch it for yourself, then start talking safer.

Swimming Pools are one of the least green elements of a home. Unfortunately they consume lots of power, water, and harmful chemicals.  Heating a pool with a traditional gas pool heater can cost hundreds of dollars for a couple hours of fun.

Solar Pool Heaters harness the power of the sun to heat your pool. They are essentially rubber tubes laid on your roof, through which your pools water passes through.  The warmth of the sun heats up the water.  Most solar pool heater systems utilize your existing pool pump to push the water into the water coils on your roof.  Some situations will require a booster pump.  These systems can cost from $2000 to $5000.

These systems include a Solar Pool Heater controller that you can set to turn off the system or prevent water over a certain temperature from getting circulated.

Our system has worked well, heating water well into the 80’s and easily extending the swimming pools season. One downside is that you may hear pool water gurgling up…

Sometimes, life imitates art.

Portrayed as a Hero on television, actress/activist Hayden Panettiere is continually lending her celebrity status toward a good cause.

The young actress, activist and Heroes star has once more returned to Taiji in an effort to raise awareness against the yearly dolphin slaughter that occurs there – as was highlighted in this year’s Oscar-winning film the Cove.

Panettiere has visited Taiji several times in the past to participate in protests against the dolphin hunt. This most recent visit comes just weeks after “The Cove,” a gory depiction of Taiji’s dolphin slaughter, which won an Academy Award last month.

Accompanied by her boyfriend, world champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko and various environmental activists, Panettiere attempted to meet with town mayor and representatives from the local fisheries during her visit, but wasn’t even allowed through the front door.

The famously “indestructible cheerleader” on the series Heroes is also…

By instituting Green Key as a brand standard, Sofitel has committed to having its entire U.S. portfolio comprised of eight properties on the program by the end of April.

Accor is widely recognized within the hospitality industry as one of the most progressive companies in regards to sustainability initiatives. Sofitel’s commitment to Green Key follows on the heels Accor North America launching a Green Key pilot earlier this year with 20 Motel 6 and Studio 6 properties.

The Sofitel San Francisco Bay also participated in that pilot, and the positive feedback from the property on the Green Key program prompted Sofitel to act on a brand level.

“Joining forces with Green Key was a natural step for Sofitel Luxury Hotels, given the brand’s long-standing commitment to sustainable practices,” explained Renée Swoger, Senior Manager of Energy & Environment Services for Accor North America.

“Further, we understand that guests value environmentally-friendly hotels, and we are excited to offer…

In 2008, Marriott embarked on a four-year plan to protect 1.4 million acres of Juma’s endangered forest in The Juma Sustainable Development Reserve in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Without this intervention, up to 62 percent of the Juma rainforest will be lost to illegal deforestation activities by 2050, resulting in 4 million tons of carbon emissions in the first 10 years alone.

Tauck Romano Innovative Philanthropy (TRIP) has joined Marriott International’s ongoing effort to leverage sustainable tourism, conservation and training in Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest – committing $50,000 to support education and a new Sustainable Agriculture Learning Center within the Juma Reserve in the Brazilian state of Amazonas.

The Learning Center, a project of the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation in Manaus, is now providing local residents with access to a year-long sustainable rainforest permaculture training program that demonstrates how protection of the rainforest’s resources can improve the…

clean energy

Here we go again in the NJ legislature.  Another cut, more businesses leave the state.  This cut may be the biggest loss to New Jersey. Clean Energy, which would promote jobs not take away jobs. Think more tax revenues.

I received the following email for Environment New Jersey. I urge all my Garden State readers to take action and tell Governor Christie to cut the fat from his own government first before he cuts budget items that promote jobs.   See below:

“Last Thursday, over 300 clean energy supporters, including representatives from over 50 clean energy businesses, poured into a public hearing room in Trenton. So many people came that officials had to kick some out of the room to avoid a fire hazard.

Why were they there? To tell Gov. Chris Christie — who has championed jobs and economic growth — not to decimate the growing clean energy economy in the Garden State with his draconian budget cuts.

Click here to tell your state legislators to stand up to…

Eco-Friendly Products30 Mar 2010 04:02 am

The increasing popularity of green chemicals for industrial cleaning applications indicates more people have become aware about the toxicity of artificial detergents. Artificial, the efficiency and cleaning power of today’s top green chemicals have equaled and even surpassed that of artificial chemicals.

One of the main applications of these eco-friendly products is in carpet cleaning. Because carpet extractors depend on the efficiency of cleaning solutions more than any other cleaning equipment, choosing the right cleaning formula is vital. After all, carpets must be pre-sprayed with a cleaning solution for effective carpet cleaning.

The following are some tips to select the most suitable green chemicals for carpet cleaning.

Check Genuineness

One must make sure the green product is actually green. Some products contain the word “green” in their label. However, if one looks at the ingredients of the formula, there may not be much difference between an artificial…

Solar Energy30 Mar 2010 04:01 am

The widespread acceptance of solar energy will require the solar PV industry to mature to the level necessary for adoption amongst the entire population, not just the early adopters and green enthusiasts.

There are several common concerns amongst current and potential solar buyers, more so for those population groups that are less inclined to adopt a new or unique technology (late adopters and laggards). These concerns are mostly due to the lack of general information about solar energy, including a lack of knowledge of laws and initiatives on both the state and federal level that greatly mitigate the risk of going solar.

The following are some of the primary concerns commonly expressed by potential solar adopters, excluding the most important factor in the majority of solar installations – financials.

Reliability of Solar Energy Providers

With well funded national solar integrators and well established local players, this is becoming less of a concern for potential solar…

By Kari Hamserschlag, EWG Senior Analyst

school-lunch-150x150.png**UPDATE** Since this piece was originally written on March 24th, the Senate Ag Committee approved Senator Lincoln’s (D-AK) Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which would cut $2.8 billion from a key agricultural conservation program to pay for improvements in school lunch (among other things). These programs help farmers and ranchers implement practices that deliver critical benefits like healthy soil, reduced chemical use, less pesticide and fertilizer runoff in our water, cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

EWG strongly supports increased funding for school lunch. In fact, we support a bigger increase than the $4.5 billion proposed by Senator Lincoln. We completely reject the idea, however, that we should rob money from conservation and clean water to pay for it. Instead, we believe that we should pay for an even bigger increase in school lunch funding by making relatively small cuts in commodity programs that…
