Solar Energy10 Mar 2010 05:01 am

Everett Rogers popularized the Diffusion of Innovations in 1962, a theory of how and why new ideas and technologies are adopted by a population. The adoption of solar energy can be analyzed through the following intrinsic characteristics that influence a purchase decision:

Relative Advantage
Potential solar energy adopters want to know how electricity generated by a solar system is better than electricity generated by the utility. With correct engineering and design, the electricity produced by a solar energy system is no different than the electricity delivered by the utility grid. Solar energy can be more reliable and secure than utility electricity when integrated with a backup system – enabling a truly uninterruptible source of energy for the building.

Solar also has a financially advantage to increasingly costly traditional utility electricity. Solar energy both reduced the fixed cost of electricity for the building owner and hedges against further electricity price…

The city of San Francisco recently started GreenFinanceSF, a financing program that helps to pay for water savings, energy efficiency, and renewable energy projects that you might not have been able to afford.  The repayment obligation is attached to the property, rather than the individual, and is paid back through property taxes over the life of the financing.

Eligible projects include energy audits, upgrading heating systems, upgrading water heaters, installing solar hot water, installing solar electric panels, and conserving hot water. The program has an online application and application processing fee of $300.

Unwanted Fax Advertisement

The other night the phone rang at 3 am in the morning! It scared the H out of me. As I rolled over to pick up the phone, I noticed it was my fax line that was ringing.  Who in the heck was faxing me in the middle of the night?

Readers, has this happened to you?

The next day I checked the National  Do not Call service to see if I entered my fax number as a “do not call” for marketers.  Well, there was the number plain as day in their registry.  I figured this fax was a fluke and in the event I received another one, I would file a complaint.

Well, this Sunday I received another one.  As I stared at the fax, I noticed the following sentence on the bottom:

“To Unsubscribe Please Register Your Fax Number at www.NationalDoNotFaxList.org.

Hmm.   Was this a hoax?  Gingerly and being skeptical, I entered the url name into my search engine. (By the way the web address above is re-directed to  www.stopjunkfax.org.) With a gulp, I entered my fax line. Hopefully this…

Is faxing bad for the environment?

The other day, I received my second unwanted fax from a broadcast advertiser.  In my post, “How to Stop Unwanted Faxes,” I gave you the keys on how to stop these faxes from showing up in your fax tray.  But as I thought about it more and more, was faxing just plain bad for the environment?

This thought about fax’s environmental impact did not just come out of the blue.  (Although many of my thoughts do.)  The unwanted fax had a unsubscribe address, National Do Not Fax. (Also know as “Stop Junk Faxes.”)

When I went to the site, the organization promoted e-faxing in the name of the environment.  Of course, it was linked to an e-fax website, MyFax, with starting costs at $10 a month/$110 per year for 100 sending faxes and 200 receiving faxes.  (Prices varied based upon the amount of faxes sent and received. )

But I was intrigued with their green argument of why you should use an e-fax site from  both a financial and environmental standpoint. They argued…

Website: http://www.earthpm.com/2010/03/followup-nuclear-energy-green…

powerThis is a followup to my post about whether or not nuclear power is considered green power and Vermont, the Green Mountain State’s issue with the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant license renewal.  I was channel surfing today and because of my “connection” with Vermont, the power plant in Vernon, and the refusal of by Vermont’s legislature to renew the plant’s license to operate, a segment on Varney & Company caught my ear.

On Monday Stuart Varney interviewed State Senator Peter Shumlin (D) Vermont, about the power plant license renewal.  A question asked by Mr. Varney was about what Vermont was going to do when the power plant was shutdown in 2012.  Where were they going to get their power?  Senator Shumlin’s answer was a little vague saying that they would buy some from Canada and encourage more renewable energy like solar, after all, “Germany was getting 30% of their power from solar energy”.

Well, after some research by Mr. Varney, and shared on Tuesday’s show, it was…
