“Vermont Yankee is committed to keeping Vermont’s environment strong and healthy. The safe and reliable operation of the plant helps ensure that the state’s abundant and beautiful forests, rivers, and lakes are not damaged by acid rain. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), in 2008, Vermont Yankee avoided the emission of 6,500 tons of sulfur dioxide, 1,400 tons of nitrogen oxides and 2.8 million metric tons of CO2. Since 2005, Vermont Yankee has been contributing to Vermont’s “Clean Energy Fund,” and by 2012, VY will have contributed about $35 million, providing money for the development of renewable energy sources in VT.

In the United States alone nuclear energy accounts for about 72 percent of all U.S. emission-free generation.

Blue Vinyl: Good movie. Bad plastic.

As you might imagine, I’ve seen my share of movies about toxic chemicals. There are a bunch, many of them excellent.

This one struck me because of the director’s personal inspiration to track down the source of her parent’s shiny new (practical, affordable, durable) vinyl siding. I love how she just won’t stop short of convincing them it’s not as simple as they think (been there?).

She had a hunch that vinyl had a dark side and, not surprising to me or Enviroblog readers, it does.

San Juan’s Verdanza Hotel sets new environmental standards

Since its unveiling in December 2009, The recently rebranded Verdanza Hotel San Juan – the only independent full-service hotel in San Juan – has established itself as a leader in environmental responsibility, while carefully balancing a comprehensive approach to personalized service and attention to detail.

“We are working to set a new precedent in San Juan for sustainable business operations,” says Ricky Newman, general manager. “As a newly rebranded property, it was extremely important to us to make these practices part of our mission.”

While eco-conscious practices such as recycling at hotels are expected, Verdanza has taken extra steps with initiatives such as providing disposable restaurant and picnic lunch to-go containers that are 100 percent biodegradable, made from corn resin.
