shamrock7tmQuick: no thinking on this one – what color do you associate with St. Patrick’s Day?

Hopefully you said green.  You did say green, right?

Given that confluence of color and holiday, here at EarthPM we’re taking the opportunity to announce something brand-new and exciting related to Green Project Management, and we’ve chosen t’ do it on the eve of March 17th – St. Patrick’s day, or in Gaelic, Lá Fhéile Pádraig.

That “something” is The Shamrock 7 – a (soon-to-be-prestigious) recognition award for the 7 most influential people in green project management.  It will honor the top 7 (with no ranking amongst the seven) people from around the world for their contributions and importance to this nascent field.

The details are still forming, but we know the intent and basic criteria for the award.

Nominations will be accepted after July when detailed criteria are available.

Judging will be done by a panel here at EarthPM, and the winners will be featured on our site, and will receive…

I found a friend who was using Chinese Miraculous Insecticide Chalk otherwise known as Pretty Baby Chalk and Chinese Chalk.  Tres Pasitos is a Spanish name for this product. The product is illegal and dangerous. The EPA has a warning on it too. We tried it in the past and found that it didn’t really work.

It does kill bugs because it contains toxic chemicals but are hazardous around kids.  The chemicals in the chalk change from batch to batch and have contained chemicals that produce serious health effects, including vomiting, stomach pains, convulsions, tremors, coma, and death due to respiratory failure. Serious allergic reactions are also possible. If you see a store selling this, report them to the local health department or agricultural Department.

Green Pesticide Alternatives:

We also use Orange Guard, which is d-Limonene (orange peel extract) based to keep ants away. Spray and leave it for a while to soak.

Check out our green pest control article. Eco friendly pesticide…

Back in the 1950’s, Science Fiction author Isaac Asimov enthralled readers with stories about Multivac, a huge all-knowing computer that took up many rooms to house its “innards”.  Today, this vision is reality but through the Internet - not just one machine, but many.

Could Bloom Energy have created a new power solution similar to the Internet in its ability to transform our lives?

After roughly $400M and 8 years, Bloom Energy has released its Bloom Box, which is a fuel cell based energy “server”, directly analogous to the large data servers used by data centers today.   Priced at roughly $800k, this version of the Bloom Box is clearly targeted to corporate customers.  Google is one of the early adopters, and reports hefty savings in both power usage and CO2 emissions.  Other early adopters include Bank of America, Coca-Cola, eBay, FedEx, and Walmart.

The Bloom Box is based on oxide fuel cells, a technology that is not dependent on sunlight or wind like solar or windmill…

Expedia, perhaps one of the most popular online travel engines in the world, has recently announced the inclusion of Green Lodging Certifications into its online hotel listings. As part of a new partnership with Green Key Global, the online agency will showcase hotel properties’ “Green Key Eco-Rating” – touting each property’s commitment to “green” hotel operations.

The agreement is part of Expedia’s efforts to upgrade the resources available to eco-conscious travelers within the Expedia.com website and the “Traveler’s Guide to Going Green” micro-site.

“Today’s travelers are increasingly interested in gauging the environmental practices of hotels and other travel suppliers,” said Expedia’s Janice Lichtenwaldt, who earned her MBA in Sustainability from the Bainbridge Graduate Institute. “To that end, Expedia has elected to increase the ‘green’ resources available to our customers, as well as the ‘green’ recognition available to our partner hotels. We did our due…

As a teacher, I know how much waste a school produces in the name of education – trees give their lives to childrens paper, party cups, paper towels. School-discarded plastic fills the landfill. Markers last a few weeks at best, and their useless carcasses are quickly tossed, and another $2.99 is spent [...]
