A Denver grandmother of eight, who happens to be a trained nutritionist, decided to see for herself just how effective the preservatives used in large segments of the U.S. food system actually are.

She left an untouched McDonald’s Happy Meal on a shelf in her kitchen for 12 months and has just released photos of the result. As some might expect, the year-old meal of beef, bun and French fries looks hardly different a year after it was first purchased. Hollywood note: Those of you looking to dial back the years may want look into this a little more.

Even the flies didn’t want it
The most revealing and somewhat scary part of this experiment was that she said the left-out food didn’t attract a single fly or any other insect over the entire year. Flies swarm almost anything with an odor. They turn out in droves to hover over a dog pile but apparently had no interest in the kids’ meal.

“I had the windows open many times, but flies and…

Smart Sprinkler
My water bill has been steadily climbing to new record levels.  It was time to look for ways to save water and money. Spring is a good time to look into this.  There will still be rainy days ahead where we would not want to waste water.

EPA’s WaterSense web site has indicated that as much as 70% of a home’s total water use during the dry season may go towards landscape irrigation. 50% of that water may be wasted due to evaporation. EPA WaterSense Draft specifications for weather- or sensor-based irrigation control technologies are currently under development.

Drip irrigation is more efficient than spray irrigation.  Hand water is also very efficient.

Some water districts like East Bay MUD even have rebates for using Self-Adjusting Irrigation Controllers.

SmartLine has the Weathermatic line that has won awards from Consumers Digest. They have models that use on site weather stations to taylor irrigation to your microclimante.

Some controllers require a subscription to get…

It’s  Springtime!   As our thoughts turn toward  that dreadful time of year– spring cleaning,  consider how you plan of ridding yourself of all that accumulated junk.  Instead of simply filling up our garbage bins or dumpsters, we can put some green in our spring cleaning by giving our old stuff a new life.

By now, all of you have heard of  Craigslist.  If you haven’t tried it out, it is worth a shot.  Up your odds of  selling with a picture attached to the ad.  I sold my whole house in just a few days.   But move over Craigslist as there is a new guy in town; Freecycle.   It is a grassroots movement that now boasts 7,090,000 members worldwide! Freecycle consists of local groups headed up by a local (volunteer) moderator - your neighbors post either things they have and don’t want or things they need.  Through emails or Yahoo groups, you stay informed of either needs or wants, and can either give items a new life or get rid of things you no longer need.

Freecycle is…

On Earth Hour, March 27, 2010, hundreds of millions of people around the world will come together to call for action on climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. Since its inception three years ago, Earth Hour’s non-partisan approach has captured the world’s imagination and become a global phenomenon.

For the second consecutive year, hundreds of Starwood Hotels & Resorts will participate in the global event created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), to send a powerful global message about the importance of environmental sustainability and caring for the planet.

On the evening of March 27, Starwood hotels entire portfolio – including St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Westin, Le Méridien, Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton, and the recently launched Aloft, and Element – will turn off their lights and take other energy-saving measures for one full hour, underscoring the company’s dedication to environmental …

Today is World Water Day – a UN-lead initiative that globally recognizes the water crisis that is literally draining the life out of our planet.

Around the globe, one out of every six people lacks safe drinking water and two out of every five people lack adequate sanitation. In turn, the second leading cause of child death and the most common cause of illness in the world today is diarrhea caused by dirty drinking water or unsanitary conditions.

“Last year, my eyes were opened to the problems caused by a lack of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene,” said PSI (Population Services International) Ambassador, actress and singer/songwriter Mandy Moore, who traveled to Southern Sudan last May with PSI.

“Here on Capitol Hill, it’s hard for us to imagine what it’s like to face illness every time we’re thirsty but it’s a reality in Southern Sudan. It is an overwhelmingly tragic situation but the good news is we can do something about it.”

Moore has joined a coalition…

International buildingcode

On March 15, 2010, the International Code Council announced the launch of the theInternational Green Construction Code (IGCC), which represents a merger of two national efforts to adopt and create standards for enforceable green building standards.  The code combines the efforts of the ICC,  ASHRAE, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES.)  The AIA and ASTM International were early suppporters of the guidelines.  (See here the members and organizations which were part of the Sustainable Building Technology Committee.)

For decades, ICC and ASHRAE have worked to develop codes and standards that become the industry standard of care for the design, construction, operations, and maintenance of residential and commercial buildings in the U.S. and internationally. In coordination with the efforts of ICC and ASHRAE, USGBC has been leading a nationwide green building movement centered on the LEED Green…

Now that health care reform is for the most part a done deal, our nation's political attention will soon turn to the Fall elections. And no matter what your political views are, one thing is for sure… every campaign needs yard signs!

With so many elections around the country, that's a lot of signs. Most of them end up in landfills after the contest is over, creating tons and tons of trash that will take decades to decompose completely. As I researched the subject of green political campaigns for this post, I noticed several stories online about stricter environmental standards being set for earth-friendly election signage in countries like Turkey and India. Given the current political climate in the US, I wouldn't be surprised to see this issue coming up more often here in the US as well…and Ecoswag can be part of the solution.

Campaign lawn sign We offer simple-to-install, inexpensive political lawn signs made from recyclable, durable plastic material on a sturdy, reusable metal frame like…
