conflict

In this entry we look at a project conflict resolution tool and relate it to a news event from today’s papers which is funny in a way, but very, very sad in another way.

The tool is the Thomas-Kilmann model, which sounds very fancy and hard to understand but is actually very straightforward, powerful, and applicable to your role as a project manager in understanding and dealing with conflict.

And you know that as a PM you will deal with conflict.

Why?  Here are three main reasons:

  • Projects are – by definition -new and unique, and invoke change.  People are – by nature – adverse to change.  This is fundamental.
  • You will be managing the project “as if” you are a supervisor/manager of a team – without the commensurate title/level that has the team members actually reporting to you.
  • You have team members – again, by definition – from different disciplines that think and behave differently (think artist and engineer, software developer and installer).
  • You can already imagine that…

Deadly asbestos fiberAsbestos is probably the most infamous carcinogenic material ever used. It has been responsible for the deaths of an untold number of people going as far back as 100 AD, when contemporary reports tell of Greek and Roman slaves falling ill after weaving cloth made from the substance.

Many Americans believe the mineral has been banned or restricted in the United States, but that is not the case. Manufacturers import significant amounts for use in a wide range of products, such as concrete and floor tiles. Domestic use increased from 3.8 million pounds in 2007 to 4.1 million pounds in 2008, with 76 percent used in roofing materials, including shingles.

Asbestos was the first substance the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) attempted to ban in 1989 under the Toxics Substances Control Act. However, EPA’s decision was overturned two years later in the U.S. Circuit…

As you can see from the above picture, solar panels can get dirty. I try to clean my solar panels at least two times a year. March/April when the rainy season has passed, and August/September, towards the end of summer.  Pollen from nearby evergreens really sticks to the panels.  Try to clean that off before it bonds, otherwise a cleaner like Windex would be needed.

I have found a 10-15% decrease in solar output when my panels are dirty.

I gently hose off my solar panels and use a soft car wash brush to lightly scrub the dirt off when doing solar panel cleaning.  I have heard that people with hard water may need to wash their solar panels using a delivered water service, so check into that if your water is hard.

Too lazy to do your own solar panel maintenance? There are companies that will do solar panel cleaning for you.

Interested in joining the club by installing Solar Panels? Find a Local Dealer that has FREE solar power site evaluations. You have nothing to lose, except…

According to UNICEF, 3 million minors are victims of sexual exploitation every year. A recent study found that at least 146 Canadian citizens have been charged with child sex offenses overseas between 1993 and 2007.

The study, by law professor Benjamin Perrin from the University of British Columbia, found that the offenders – mostly men – usually travel from a rich country to a developing region such as Latin America, an area which is growing in popularity and replacing southern Asia as the main destination for sex offenders due to its low cost and close proximity.

After an information forum on Child Sex Tourism coordinated by the International Bureau for Children’s Rights (IBCR), Thomas Cook and SkyLink Voyages, agencies from the tourism and travel industry decided to act. In close collaboration with the bureau, representatives created a new campaign with the objective to dissuade potential abusers and encourage travelers to report suspicious behaviors while…

I am just utterly compelled to release my excitement over the new series on the Discovery Channel, Life. Quite possibly some of the most amazing wildlife footage since the Planet Earth series, it may even top it! I haven’t been this excited about a show/series since Sharkweek, and that was like 12 years ago.

Mass Mobilization at the Chevron Oil Refinery in Richmond

Guest Post from Green Talk reader, Jim, a retired civil engineer who is fascinated by solar and wind technology:

I am not usually paranoid. But I just can’t stop thinking about how one of the biggest oil companies in the world is now one of America’s largest solar power companies.

    Chevron.

This oil company is doing solar power at a few dozen spots around the country, San Jose Unified School District, Contra Costa Community College District, University of Buffalo, the U.S. Postal Service and even a few oil fields. (For more information, see this LA Times story.)

I’m sure the folks at Chevron are nice people who love their mothers and recycle soda bottles.

But really, let’s take a minute to state the obvious: What in the name of all that is green is an oil company like Chevron doing getting all this solar business?

Just a few months ago 60 Minutes ran a story about the environmental nightmare Chevron left behind in Latin America.   The…
