Alton Brown, Food Network Celeb, asks What’s For Lunch
Author: Amy Rosenthal
Website: http://www.enviroblog.org/2010/05/alton-brown-food-network-c…
You may know him as Food Network’s top culinary scientist or the commentator on the hit show Iron Chef, but Alton Brown is first and foremost a dad. That means he’s concerned about his daughter’s health - and given his day job, particularly what she’s eating.
Brown recently spoke at a panel hosted by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, an organization in Georgia working hard to get healthier food to more kids.
In this clip, he gives a TV star-worthy talk on visiting his daughter’s school, where he spoke with kids about what they like to eat, what they should eat, and what’s for lunch.
To hear what he has to say about his field trip, click the image below and choose the “Penny introduces Alton Brown” segment.

(EWG shout-out to John Bare, Blank Family Foundation VP, for bringing this cool talk to the attention of our prez, Ken Cook.)

Which airline is most eco-friendly?
Author: Joe Ascanio
Website: http://www.terracurve.com/2010/05/28/which-airline-is-most-e…
California-based airline Virgin America was recently named “Most Eco-Friendly Airline” in the SmarterTravel Editors’ Choice Awards.
“As a new airline and the only California-based carrier, we’ve made sustainable practices a focus in our operations and training from day one,” said David Cush, President and CEO of Virgin America. “Although no airline can be perfect, we’re pleased to be recognized for our green efforts to date and we will continue to make environmental best practices part and parcel of our business model as we grow.”
Since its launch, Virgin America has operated a brand new fleet that is up to 25% more fuel and carbon efficient than the average fleet flying domestically. The airline employs practices such as single engine taxiing, maximizing use of efficient ground power, utilizing advanced avionics to fly more efficiently, and cost index flying — the practice of regulating cruising speeds to reduce fuel burn.
It is also the first airline to list its…

How to Create Raised Garden Beds even for the Tool Challenged
Author: Green Talk
Website: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/green-talk/jRYI/~3/7zUEEl1RRA…

Have you dreamed of owning your own raised beds for growing your vegetables? Shied away because you are tool challenged or just don’t have the know how? Or when would you find the time?
Over the last three years, I have used raised beds and have found that my vegetables grow better in them versus right in the ground. (Here is a glimpse of my stylish raised beds. Yep. Always a trend-setter. ) This may be because the beds seem to drain better or perhaps the raised beds are warmer. Who knows. Simply put, happy vegetables means bigger yields, in turn makes me one happy camper. (And, you know the old saying. If the wife is happy, then so is the husband. So, he is happy camper too. So, he says.)
How Gardening Has Become an Obsession
Over the last couple of years, my gardening obsession, um hobby, has continue to expand and the little garden that could has now become 21 beds strong (and counting..Let this be our little secret. Don’t tell the hubby…

All about sunscreen: Live chat with EWG
Author: Lisa Frack
Website: http://www.enviroblog.org/2010/05/all-about-sunscreen-live-c…
On May 24th, we released our 4th annual Sunscreen Guide. While our basic message is pretty straight forward - cover up first, slop on some effective sunscreen next - the sunscreen choices are so plentiful as to confound even the most avid label readers (that’s me).
So, once you’ve had a week (and hopefully a sunny weekend) to absorb the information - and some sunscreen chemicals - you’ve probably got a question or two. Maybe you’re a little confused by ever-increasing SPF numbers? Or not sure which chemicals make the “must avoid” list, and why?
Join EWG to get some answers and learn a little more about sunscreen on Wednesday, June 2nd from 2-3 PM eastern, when we’re hosting a live chat right here on Enviroblog with EWG sunscreen experts Jane Houlihan (Senior VP for Research) and Sonya Lunder (Senior Analyst).

Recycling Tips
Author: easy eco blog
Website: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/easyecoblog/~3/8MRXs43vCas/

Here are some non obvious recycling tips from our local garbage carrier, Allied Waste. Check with your local company to verify how they handle recycling.
1) Rinsed coated milk and juice cartons. Plastic caps and plastic pour spouts must be removed before recycling.
2) No Pizza boxes
3) No black plastic (any type)
4) No nursery plant containers
5) No Toys
6) No Plastic Clam shells
7) Cardboard boxes like detergent ones cannot be recycled unless they are thoroughly cleaned.
Allied Waste recycles single use batteries if you place them in a plastic bag on top of recyclables. Best Buy has recycling bins for rechargeable batteries. Earth911 can help you find local battery recycling.
Harder to Recycle Items
Most supermarkets have bins that recycle plastic bags.
Recycle CFL – compact fluorescent light bulbs at Home Depot.
TerraCycle makes affordable, eco-friendly products from a wide range of different non-recyclable waste materials. Capri Sun – Honest Kids juice pouches can be…

Chandelier Hanging Tips and Instructions
Website: http://www.eco-lights.com
Chandeliers, which date back to the 16th century, are a set of decorative light fixtures put together on a single stand and hung artistically from the center of the ceiling to illuminate the entire room. Chandeliers would often light the entire room thanks to the reflection of the light on the dexterously cut and artistically made crystal stands. Chandeliers have advanced with time and technology. Today they come in a myriad of exquisite designs and styles to match every imaginable home interior. Installing a chandelier is very simple, here are a few steps on how you can go about it.

- First and foremost, you have to decide on the exact location of hanging your chandelier. Followed by removing your old lighting fixture, say semi flush mounts, if there is any. You should first switch off the main electric circuit and proceed to disconnect all the electric wirings.
- Get rid of all appliances that were used with the old lighting fixture including the support bar and…

Two and a half MMS
Author: earthpm
Website: http://www.earthpm.com/2010/05/two-and-a-half-mms/

This is disgusting.
Here you will find a report posted today by the US Government to the web and which we bring you in the spirit of helping to understand the ‘monitor and control‘ part of project management, or really, business in general. In fact, the people in this report behave as if they were Charlie Sheen’s character (or perhaps his brother or nephew) on the US television program Two and a Half Men. And thus the post’s title.
The MMS, (Minerals Management Service) is the US Federal oversight agency responsible for controlling the oil industry. They are the ones who ‘bless’ the drilling platforms in the Gulf, for example.
It’s clear from this report (you only need to read the cover letter to get this) that governance was not properly in place.
Rather than laboring over all of the things that we need to learn from this, I would just suggest that you have a look and realize that in your projects (and in life) you must know that measurements are polluted (excuse the pun)…
