Footprint_v1-3[1] Here at Ecoswag I do my best to stay afloat on the eco-friendly promotional product wave. As more of our suppliers expand their green product offerings, I have my hands full (to say the least).

It is an exciting time in our industry because of the innovation that's going into the development of new, green items. From recycled electronics to recycled elephant poo, I’m having fun keeping you in the know about what’s new on the eco side of the promo industry.

This blog post is to introduce you to our new Recycled Cotton T Shirt made by Anvil, and why this is a terrific, budget-friendly alternative to more expensive organic cotton t-shirts.

If you've been in the market for eco-friendly custom t-shirts over the past few years your selection has been pretty limited. Unless you have the budget for premium priced bamboo or hemp shirts, organic cotton t-shirts have been the only game in town… and let's be honest - they're spendy compared to plain old cotton shirts….

The 415-room Fairmont Washington, D.C. has awarded a contract to Renewable Choice Energy to offset 100 percent of the hotel’s electricity use. The three-year contract calls for Renewable Choice Energy to supply the hotel with more than 9.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by wind farms across America.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts have been dedicated environmental stewards since 1990 with the development of the company’s comprehensive Green Partnership program, designed to minimize the hotels’ operating impacts on the environment.

“Every business has a responsibility in the community to be environmentally conscious,” says general manager George Terpilowski. “Our commitment to support renewable energy development and reduce carbon emissions has an impact similar to planting 42,982 mature trees or not driving more than 10.5 million miles in an average passenger car.”

Over 70% of U.S. electricity comes from burning…

NJ Clean Energy Summer Savings

Anytime I see rebates being offered, I hear the “caching, caching” sound of money going back to my reader’s pockets.    So, in the mail box today I received the following from the  New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program™Rebates and Promotions:

“Based on the success of the recent ENERGY STAR® appliance promotion in April, additional rebates will be offered once again. The new promotion will cover purchases made from July 1 through August 31 (or while funds last). New Jersey residents will be eligible for rebates ranging from $25 to $100 on the purchase of ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers, clothes washers and refrigerators. The rebates are a result of the federal stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Save time and money! Many retailers will provide an instant rebate at the time you make your purchase (so no waiting for your rebate!). However, some retailers may require you to complete a mail-in rebate form.

Plus, a seasonal rebate for

If you love magazines and catalogs, and haven’t transitioned over to a Kindle or e-reader, then you may be interested to hear about how paper manufacturers and magazines are staying eco-friendly. Or not. While some contain 10-15% recycled content and FSC certified paper, most still use 100% virgin paper. One company stands out in this [...]

Babies learn a lot when they’re in their younger years. Nursery lighting provides style and function especially when you have generated a theme for your little one. They respond well to much color and playful-looking designs that can allow them to extend their imaginations. When deciding what types of children lighting fixtures to hang up, set aside what you and your child would want, what you and your child might need, and try to incorporate a theme so they can inhabit a colorful environment. Remember keep it stylized—kids love color!

There are more than one type of lighting fixtures you can install in your child’s room. First, try to incorporate your child’s age with what they would want. If your child is a 3 month old, barely even crawling yet, I suggest you install an airplane chandelier since they would most likely be looking up at the ceiling more than usual. Or if it’s a girl, possibly a pink ballet shoe designed chandelier would work. There are countless ideas…

hht-baby.jpgEvery month we send our e-listers (yes, that could be you) a Healthy Home Tip.

Since last year, we’ve sent 12, ranging from picking better personal care products to greener cleaning and drinking clean water).

In May, we focused on giving kids a green and healthy start in 4 ways. Here are the basics - for the full story, visit EWG’s Healthy Home Tip web page.

1. Reduce Mom’s chemical exposures while pregnant
Pregnancy is a critical time. A mother’s chemical exposures can adversely affect her baby in many ways. Talk to your doctor about lifestyle changes that are critical — stopping smoking, cutting out alcoholic beverages, and eating right.

Beyond that, here are some simple, but important steps, you can take to further reduce risks during pregnancy — and beyond:

  • Go organic and eat fresh foods.
  • Drink safer water.
  • Eat low-mercury seafood.
  • Get your iodine.
  • Choose better body care products.
  • Wash maternity clothes before wearing.
  • Identify lead sources and…

ygg-prof-image-small.pngWhen I was pregnant with my second child, I read Sandra Steingraber’s book, Having Faith, a haunting account of the effects of toxic chemicals on babies in utero, written while she was pregnant herself.

It opened my eyes to the critical importance of timing when it comes to chemical exposures, and spurred me to make some behavioral changes to reduce my exposures to toxic chemicals while pregnant (more organics, fewer and less toxic personal care products, and greener cleaning supplies, among them. For more ideas, see EWG’s 11 Healthy Pregnancy Tips).

But for those among us with little reading time (parents in general!), this new video about environmental health during pregnancy covers a lot of ground on four topics in a mere 20 minutes:

  • Environmental tobacco smoke,
  • Beauty treatments and personal care products,
  • Exposures in the home, and
  • Food safety and healthy eating.

The video was designed to help prenatal healthcare providers and educators teach women how to reduce…

Emirates Hotels & Resorts’ long term commitment to sustainability and the environment through its hotels and resorts portfolio was recently rewarded with one of the most prestigious global awards in the travel and tourism industry: the Conservation Award at the 2010 World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Global Summit, held this year in Beijing.

The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are the WTTC’s highest-profile global accolade, recognizing best practices in sustainable tourism development, conservation and biodiversity protection.

Within the Emirates Group, the Emirates Hotels & Resorts (EH&R) portfolio encompasses three major conservation projects spread across three continents: Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa in Dubai; Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa in Australia; and the forthcoming Cap Ternay Resort & Spa in the Seychelles.
