Elkay EZH2O

With everyone sporting their own BYOB (bring your own water bottle) wouldn’t it be nice to have a refill water fountain? Just stick your bottle in the slot and water to go. No more plastic water bottles or paper cups at the cooler.

Well, you are in luck since Elkay’s EZH2O fillable water station with or without a water fountain makes the ubiquitous plastic water bottle or paper cup a thing of the past.  Many of you might recognize the name, Elkay, as it pertains to high quality kitchen sinks.  In fact, I have their sink products as well. So,  I can only imagine the quality of their new venture.

Elkay offers a variety of fillable water stations for new construction or retrofit situations. See here for more information on the different types of EZH2O stations available.

Why am I so excited about this water station?  Think about how many water bottles are thrown away rather than recycled.  Plus, don’t forget the health concerns surrounding plastic water…

SDGE Rebates for energy efficiency

New rebates have been added for 2010.

San Diego’s power utility San Diego Gas and Electric rebates are here.  SDGE or SDG&E has a bunch of cash SDGE rebates and ways to go green for energy efficient appliances, appliance recycling, insulation, Central Natural Gas Furnace, Whole House Fan, Duct Sealing, cool roofs, water heaters, pool pumps, Home lighting, and more. You can even submit rebate requests online and then send in proof of purchase.

Check your local utility’s web site for similar deals before you buy a new item.  Most rebates run through December 31.

We recently bought a new dishwasher that had a $50 rebate that was not advertised by the vendor. The rebate in only 2 weeks. Green your home and get cash back.

You can also call San Diego Gas and Electric at 800-411-7343 and ask about San Diego Gas and Electric rebates, SDG&E rebates, or SDGE Rebates.

Be sure to also take advantage of the 30% Federal Energy Tax Credit which expires 12/31/2010.

Ways to Save…

Have you noticed that the Alps have gotten taller? Probably not, but you have probably heard that they are losing their glaciers at a very rapid pace. This is going to have a whole list of consequences, but one of the oddest is the fact that their loss is actually going to make the mountains “rebound” and get a bit taller.

How does this work? Well, just imagine how heavy a small block of ice is, and then use this to envision the vast amount of weight that centuries of glaciers place atop the many mountain peaks. Because of global warming, however, these glaciers are rapidly receding and melting away at a speed that is disconcerting at best. Once they begin melting, they also begin reducing the amount of downward pressure atop each of the mountains. This triggers the surface of the Earth to rebound or to assume its more natural shape, and this forces the mountains to attain a higher overall height.

Does this have any environmental significance? It means that the bases of the…

Coal burning plants are guilty for around 40 percent of the greenhouse gases being created each year. Clearly a huge amount of progress could be made where global warming and climate change is concerned if something could be done with the gases emitted.

The most promising solution is called “carbon capture”, and the most widely accepted approach to this would be to use chemical filters to capture the carbon as it leaves the coal burning plants and then to inject the compressed carbon into saline aquifers deep underground.

There is currently no existing system for doing this, and there is also a huge amount of scientific debate about the safety and practicality of such a decision. For instance, the thick rock could hold the carbon indefinitely, but any leaks could lead to the quick creation of carbolic acid that would poison ground water and the surrounding area. There are also the risks of poisonous gases and explosions at collection sites, and a serious amount of expense…

Anyone living in the western regions of the United States knows that forest fire season is no laughing matter. This is especially true for those who have lived there for many years because it is painfully obvious that the nature of the season has changed, and become more out of control.

Why is this occurring? It all has to do with global warming and the climate change it has triggered. Just consider, in the west are many enormous mountain ranges and huge areas of land at very high altitudes. Because the pattern of global warming is causing temperatures to rise substantially, it is causing glaciers in the mountains to melt off rapidly too. This leaves water levels low, but the early arrival of warmer weather also means that snow melt occurs earlier as well. This adds up to a period of drought almost every year because the weather does not match the available water supplies. This dryness is what is leading to more and more forest fires.

Just consider, the long pattern of weather in…

We are all aware of the fact that global warming is leading to climate change. We can see this in different weather patterns and all kinds of changes in the sea levels. We also know that many natural habitats are at serious risk as well. What many people don’t stop to consider are the less obvious risks of a “big thaw”. For example, the loss of glaciers means increasing global temperatures due to the loss of reflection from the brilliant white ice and snow. There is also the risk of permafrost being lost as well.

Just imagine if the permanently frozen soils beneath the polar or Arctic regions should thaw…it would cause a huge amount of shifting and alteration across somewhat expansive spaces. Need an example? Imagine a plastic soda bottle full of water…if you put this into a freezer you can see that it swells to the point of bursting as the water solidifies. This is a good illustration of what occurs in the massive areas of land known as permafrost too. They have swollen…

For aquatic nature lovers, the majestic sea turtle’s nesting patterns are awe-inspiring. Each year between April and October, endangered and threatened sea turtles get their annual chance to expand their shrinking populations and perhaps ensure their presence in our oceans for another of its generations.

A key nesting ground for many sea turtle species, the Panama coastline’s warm, equatorial waters are home to five different types: the hawksbill, loggerhead, green, leatherback and olive ridley species.

This time of the year, newly hatched turtles can be seen struggling across Panama’s sandy beaches towards the sea.

“People occasionally come across a nest of sea turtle hatchlings on some of the area beaches,” said Ben Loomis, President of Amble Resorts and their Panama real estate project, The Resort at Isla Palenque. “The sight of these rare little sea monsters really heightens your sense of responsibility and protectiveness.” Loomis and his development …
