As you might imagine, I’ve seen my share of movies about toxic chemicals. There are a bunch, many of them excellent.

This one struck me because of the director’s personal inspiration to track down the source of her parent’s shiny new (practical, affordable, durable) vinyl siding. I love how she just won’t stop short of convincing them it’s not as simple as they think (been there?).

She had a hunch that vinyl had a dark side and, not surprising to me or Enviroblog readers, it does.

Find out about PVC for yourself by following co-director Judith Helfand’s investigative globe trot to understand the real (not-so-simple) source of her parents’ blue vinyl.

Since its unveiling in December 2009, The recently rebranded Verdanza Hotel San Juan – the only independent full-service hotel in San Juan – has established itself as a leader in environmental responsibility, while carefully balancing a comprehensive approach to personalized service and attention to detail.

“We are working to set a new precedent in San Juan for sustainable business operations,” says Ricky Newman, general manager. “As a newly rebranded property, it was extremely important to us to make these practices part of our mission.”

While eco-conscious practices such as recycling at hotels are expected, Verdanza has taken extra steps with initiatives such as providing disposable restaurant and picnic lunch to-go containers that are 100 percent biodegradable, made from corn resin. Nearly all hotel personnel are clothed by a line of uniforms made out of 100 percent recycled polyester produced entirely from post consumer waste and guests are encouraged to return…

Everett Rogers popularized the Diffusion of Innovations in 1962, a theory of how and why new ideas and technologies are adopted by a population. The adoption of solar energy can be analyzed through the following intrinsic characteristics that influence a purchase decision:

Relative Advantage
Potential solar energy adopters want to know how electricity generated by a solar system is better than electricity generated by the utility. With correct engineering and design, the electricity produced by a solar energy system is no different than the electricity delivered by the utility grid. Solar energy can be more reliable and secure than utility electricity when integrated with a backup system – enabling a truly uninterruptible source of energy for the building.

Solar also has a financially advantage to increasingly costly traditional utility electricity. Solar energy both reduced the fixed cost of electricity for the building owner and hedges against further electricity price…
